Extracurricular, Rachel Lynn Solomon [A Book Review]

An ultra-spicy hot-for-teacher celebrity romance to indulge in.

Ramona is a pop-star who abruptly retires after a grueling tour and ongoing mental health concerns no one around her seems to take seriously. Searching for meaning, she enrolls in university where she meets Nick, a divorcé ten years her senior, who teaches a psychology course she’s taking, but more importantly, he DOES care about her well-being.

This felt a lot more like an indulgent sort of guilty-pleasure romance than one deeply rooted in something realistic. I found myself having to suspend my disbelief more than I really like to for a straight-forward romance. I’d almost say this is more about the chemistry and spice than anything else. The heat started way earlier than I’d have thought with their dynamic, and he was definitely still her teacher, so the vibes there got a little morally icky for me.

I think what bothered me about it is that the characters don’t behave the way I’d expect them to in this situation. There is a lot at stake, but none of it really comes due. This is a romance lovers romance, one written for a reader looking for trope-forward spice. Unfortunately in this case, for me, it seemed to be at the sake of logical storytelling.
