Return to Sender, Stephanie Parente [A Book Review]

I’ve read a lot of books with themes of grief. Heck, I’m writing a book with major themes of grief. Each one of them is profound, because grief isn’t a thing you can explain en masse. A broad definition is never going to tell you what grief feels like. Because It’s specific. It’s personal. And reading stories about the different way we experience things like grief brings us together in new ways. And that is the reason I think you should Return to Sender by Stephanie Parente.

When Violet’s father passed away, she stepped into the role of caregiver for her younger sister. She dropped everything and made Phoebe her priority. She didn’t even have to think twice about it. But Phoebe isn’t coping well with the loss, and Violet feels helpless. Then the letter comes, addressed to the former tenant of their apartment, and it is so heart-achingly raw that Phoebe decides she has to know what happened, and she wants to change their ending.

The circumstances are a stretch, but they find him, and…somehow they get him to agree to a cross-country road trip to reconnect with the woman the letter is addressed to. The guy is a grump, but he seems to be able to get through to Phoebe in ways Violet hasn’t been able to. And that’s enough to commit them to a close-quarters trip cross-country.

This story is wrapped up in a spicy commercial romance wrapper I felt it didn’t really need. Some aspects seemed forced, but also, I guess the premise would have been even harder to pull off in another romance sub-genre, so who am I to judge?

The aspects of grief it explores feels authentic and complicated and messy. There’s not right way to grieve, but it’s also important to make sure you’re processing the loss and not barricading yourself away from it, and that is a lesson I feel is handled very well here.

I think it may be a little to modern romance-y for people looking for great books exploring grief, and maybe to heavy for some readers who voraciously devour spicy romance…or it might just be the perfect mix to satisfy readers on both sides of that spectrum.
