Christmas in July, Kelsey Humphreys [A Book Review]

If you’re looking for a good rom-com with heart, strong community, and stubborn, sexy characters, Kelsey Humphreys is your guy. Her new book, Christmas in July, is something of an underdog story, where the entire town is the underdog, and the hot, grouchy billionaire who buys it is their opponent.

Holiday romance, but make it summer.

Juniper Falls is bankrupt. Yup, the whole town. The kitch-y Christmas town isn’t holding its own anymore, and Harper, who runs her dad’s bakery since his Parkinson’s took a turn for the worse, is determined to save it. But Aiden doesn’t care. Locked in a family feud with another ungodly rich family, all he sees is the opportunity for profits from the resort he’s building over the existing Main Street. But he’s not a complete monster. He strikes a temporary deal with the place. They have until July to turn a profit. Then they can reconsider. An impossible task.

There are a lot of things to love about this book. Harper is particularly complex, with a complicated history that has left her with scars, her infirm father who makes the world’s best coffee, her unruly dog, and her relentless determination to make this plan work.
The town, too, continues to be endearing. It’s an extra-quirky Star’s Hollow with the personalities and wacky events to give it a run for its money.

The romance isn’t the only thing on the page, but man, it got me. Aiden is a man who knows what he wants, and Harper is a woman who isn’t easily swayed. There is a lot of resistance, and that makes it all the more delicious. And somehow she pulls off being both steamy and closed door in a way that’s just right.

If you’re a reader of romance at all, you’re going to like this one. Kelsey is hilarious and she knows how to write a good book. You won’t regret taking a chance on this one!
