Book Review:: Checking It Twice | Kendall Ryan

Friends, I’ve found you a lovely, swoony, holiday romance that will warm you up better than a cup of hot cocoa. It’s Checking It Twice by Kendall Ryan.

Clare works in PR for a hockey team in Dallas, and she’s really good at setting boundaries with those wild boys with her wit and sharp tongue. But as the holidays near, and Clare will be alone, again, it makes her a little reckless.

Mitchell Drake is heartbroken. Or at least, everyone thinks he is including his immediate family and his entire home town in Minnesota. He can’t seem to make them understand that he’s better off, so he comes up with an unconventional plan, but he can’t do it alone.

Clare would never do something so reckless and deceitful as fake date someone…except when she’s at an emotional rock bottom. But it’s okay, because even though he’s the hottest player on the team, they both understand what this is: temporary. Not real.

If you have ever like the fake dating trope or are a fan of sports romance, this is an automatic win for you. Kendall Ryan has mastered sizzling chemistry, and the character backstory work done here to make these two lovebirds into soulmates is phenomenal.

There was only one thing that kind of nagged at me and that was in the beginning chapters they all kind of ended the exact same way, restating the character’s weakening fortifications. Some of them felt pretty identical, and though it’s a satisfying way to end a chapter, so many in a row that were almost verbatim stood out to me.

Kendall Ryan is a master of her craft, and I can’t wait to read more of her work!

If you love a good mystery with clues a-plenty and complex layers, you’ll love The Christmas Jigsaw Murders, by Alexandra Benedict.

Edie O’Sullivan is a professional puzzler, creating crosswords for a job. It’s a wonderful passion, until she gets a morbid note in the mail about four murders that would take place before Christmas, and a packet with a few jigsaw pieces. She calls upon her great-nephew (whom she raised when his immediate family died), who is an inspector, to help her once bodies start dropping. There seems to be a connection to him, too, through his husband’s running club. Clues continue showing up, and a killer is on the loose at the most wonderful time of the year.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I received an alc through netgalley and the publisher, and the narration fit the book so well. Edie is an elderly lady, and Sandra Duncan did a wonderful job, especially with the humor of a little cantankerous old lady.

I enjoyed the mystery of this story, but it wasn’t my favorite part. Something about the recording and the story itself had this nostalgic sort of feeling about it. I’m not sure if it was because of the elderly MC (for most of the novel), or the Christmasy sort of spirit, but it felt really cozy to me (though I’m not sure I’d necessarily call it a cozy mystery…there are certainly high stakes).

If you’re a fan of both mystery and Christmas stories, hey, this is a perfect read for this time of year!

Book Review:: The Perfect Putt | Annah Conwell

The Perfect Putt is a sweet small-town sports romance with no spice, and lots of drama! Picture the flavor of a Sarah Adams romance (a la The Cheat Sheet), geared a little closer to a younger (or more innocent) reader audience.

Ellie Heart takes a job as the assistant to a professional golfer in order to accelerate her savings to open up her own florist business one day. She hates golf, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for Miles, who has had terrible luck keeping an assistant for long. They always get obsessed with him, and the last thing he wants is to have a serious relationship that might lead to marriage. His parents ugly divorce was enough to solidify that decision for him. But as he and Ellie get to know one another, it feels different.

This novel felt very much like a high school drama. The characters are older, but they acted quite innocently. The emotions were elevated to the point almost of exaggeration, and were certainly accelerated, making this very much insta-love territory. It wasn’t necessarily the short time component that made it feel fast, but the lack of context for the depth of feeling they were both experiencing. Some of it did feel a little silly, but it also has a certain kind of charm.

The fact that Ellie & Miles were technically employer/employee didn’t seem to add any boundary to the romance. I don’t remember it being mentioned at all as a hurdle to overcome between them, which seemed a little strange.

Overall though, The Perfect Putt felt very uplifting and positive.

Miles, in particular, has a very strong friend group. He is distant from his broken family, so it’s great that he has that support system behind him. He likes to be friends with everyone who surrounds him, which is how he starts to let Ellie in.

Ellie is just trying to stay focused on her dream of opening her own little shop in her favorite place: Coastal Cove, an idyllic small-town setting. Her widowed sister Naomi lives there with her young son and Ellie is sticking around to help her. I would expect one of the next novels in the series to center around Naomi!

The narration was done very well. Both voice actors did a great job with the material and gave life to the characters.
